My story

My Dad was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in early 2022 and is cared for by my Mum. Since his diagnosis, things have got progressively harder for them both with Dad needing support for everyday tasks now. As is often the case in these circumstances, the wellbeing of the carer suffers because they inevitably have to do so much. Looking after someone with dementia is emotionally draining and incredibly difficult and I know my Mum isn’t able to do the things she would like because she puts my Dad ahead of everything.

Last year, Dad started going to The Linlithgow Day Care Centre. This allows my Mum to have some time of her own so she can do as little or as much as she likes, and it gives my Dad a change of scene, a place to make friends and have some fun in a safe, comfortable environment. The Centre is run by a charity and like most charities, it struggles financially. Its existence is a lifeline for the community, the people who are cared for by the staff within it and the people who rely on it for their loved ones. The importance of places that offer respite, care and compassion to those who need it must never be overlooked and I wanted to try and help my Mum and Dad, and all the many other people who depend on the Centre, by raising some money to help its funding. The staff who look after my Dad on a regular basis go to great lengths to make sure he enjoys himself and I’m truly grateful for everything they do.

I love sport and the outdoors, but I’ve never run a marathon before. While I love a good 10K run over the moor in the sunshine where I live, running a much longer distance on the road will be a real challenge for me. Over the last year I’ve got back into running again and when my family and I went to watch the participants Running For Rob last year, I felt deep down that it was an event I wanted to take part in the year after. So here I am.

I’m running the Leeds Marathon for my Dad, my Mum, all the amazing staff at the Linlithgow Day Care Centre and everyone they care for. And I will cross the finish line.

My updates

Well, I survived! It was so, so hot. I’m really not comfortable running in the heat so I was never going to get a decent time. The heat got the better of me at about 13 miles. I felt pretty terrible and from that point on, walked and ran the rest of the route. 5hr 5m was my time. The support from people all the way along was absolutely phenomenal. The encouragement they provided really made a difference, especially the last 4-5 miles. I just wish I could’ve ran a better time. The heat just took everything I had after about half way round and I struggled to the end, limping across the line in the amazing atmosphere of the AMT stadium. Wow.

It was such a brilliant day and I’m so pleased that I took part. Thank you to everyone who came out to cheer us all on, and big special thank you to the lady I danced with half way up the big hill past the Chevin at mile 18. Brimful of Asha never sounded so good :-)

That’s it from me. Thank you all so so much for donating and supporting my cause. I feel so privileged to have such generous, kind and supportive friends, family and work colleagues. You’re all superstars.

Hi everyone. It’s nearly time. I can’t thank you all enough for your generosity, kindness and support over the last few months. I feel like I’ve been on a journey, both physically and mentally, and participating in the event tomorrow will be a celebration of my training. Weather conditions look good, although it’s going to be much warmer than I’d like - my Scottish blood isn’t happy in the heat!

The energy I felt watching the event last year will be amplified a hundred times tomorrow. The people who come out to cheer and encourage everyone on the course make such a difference. A gruelling physical undertaking is transformed into a truly unforgettable day filled with positivity and camaraderie. It’s one of the beauties of sport.

The lead up to tomorrow will have been emotional for many people. The coming together for an event like this is something everyone should experience. It brings home everything that is good about sport and it reminds us that we’re in it together, either with friends, relatives, or on behalf of someone near or far, or not with us anymore. It’s the taking part that counts but it wouldn’t be so special without the goodness of so many others.

My Mum and Dad and everyone who depend on the Linlithgow Community Day Care Centre will benefit from all your donations. I’m so incredibly touched and grateful. Thank you all. My number 7 and I are ready to enjoy Matt’s Marathon.

One week to go and I’ve started dreaming about running! :-O  As a friend of mine said, “You’re obviously taking it seriously!”.

I’m definitely getting apprehensive now, but I think the excitement is outweighing everything else. I’ve been in the tapering down phase of my training these past couple of weeks. I had a super comfortable 15 mile run this morning, unintentionally achieving my fastest half marathon and 10K times! If I feel that good next Sunday I’ll be more than happy!

This week is all about rest, getting good sleep, keeping my electrolytes topped up, staying hydrated and of course, carb loading! My race number arrived in the post last week and I also collected my running vest from a local shop I asked to emboss a number seven on the back - my way of showing my respect and admiration for Rob Burrow, support of his family, and all those battling with MND. It’ll be an emotional day.

I’m extremely grateful to everyone who has donated and supported me. I wish I could thank you all in person. The money raised will go directly towards funding the charity who provide care and support to my Mum and Dad and so many others.

Hi everyone. Two weeks to go and the nerves and excitement are starting to build. Training has been going well. It hasn’t always been easy to find the time to fit running around everything else, especially the 3+ hour long weekend runs, but I’ve done it the best I can. The last couple of months have taught me a lot about my own physical ability and what I need to do to try and stay comfortable after 18, 19, 20… miles of running.
I feel happy with the gear I’ve got for the day, what I intend to carry and what I intend to use to carry it. I’ve broken in my new shoes, bought a new cap, decided on my favourite high protein flapjack type, helped reduced the amount of jelly babies available on the shelves, and I’ve learned several super useful things from a book my mum got me (thanks mum!).
I think I’m ready.

A huge thanks to all of you who have donated to my cause. Being able to financially help and support the team who my mum and dad depend on means a lot to me. I’m incredibly grateful.

Hi everyone. Thank you all so much for your continued kindness, generosity and support. It a means a great deal to me. The training has been going well these past few weeks. I had a physio consultation last week which was very enlightening :-) I put the advice into practice earlier today on my 20 mile (ok 19.9) run. Amazing what a slightly shorter stride and higher cadence can achieve. My legs definitely felt the benefit.

I’m really looking forward to the big day. The atmosphere watching it last year was electric. Taking part in it will be something else. I think it’ll be an emotional day for lots of people.

I’m taking my son to a birthday party today where they’ll be doing tobogganing! I think I’ll just stand and watch. I would sit down, but I might not get back up :-) X
