My story

My Dad was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in early 2022 and is cared for by my Mum. Since his diagnosis, things have got progressively harder for them both with Dad needing support for everyday tasks now. As is often the case in these circumstances, the wellbeing of the carer suffers because they inevitably have to do so much. Looking after someone with dementia is emotionally draining and incredibly difficult and I know my Mum isn’t able to do the things she would like because she puts my Dad ahead of everything.

Last year, Dad started going to The Linlithgow Day Care Centre. This allows my Mum to have some time of her own so she can do as little or as much as she likes, and it gives my Dad a change of scene, a place to make friends and have some fun in a safe, comfortable environment. The Centre is run by a charity and like most charities, it struggles financially. Its existence is a lifeline for the community, the people who are cared for by the staff within it and the people who rely on it for their loved ones. The importance of places that offer respite, care and compassion to those who need it must never be overlooked and I wanted to try and help my Mum and Dad, and all the many other people who depend on the Centre, by raising some money to help its funding. The staff who look after my Dad on a regular basis go to great lengths to make sure he enjoys himself and I’m truly grateful for everything they do.

I love sport and the outdoors, but I’ve never run a marathon before. While I love a good 10K run over the moor in the sunshine where I live, running a much longer distance on the road will be a real challenge for me. Over the last year I’ve got back into running again and when my family and I went to watch the participants Running For Rob last year, I felt deep down that it was an event I wanted to take part in the year after. So here I am.

I’m running the Leeds Marathon for my Dad, my Mum, all the amazing staff at the Linlithgow Day Care Centre and everyone they care for. And I will cross the finish line.

My updates

Saturday 8th March

And of course a huge big thank you to everyone for donating. The support has been amazing and very touching. X

Saturday 8th March

I was back out pounding the asphalt this morning in the beautiful Yorkshire sunshine! It was absolutely stunning. I’m not one for selfies but for this week’s update I took one about half way round my loop. This is 10 miles into the run after a steady climb up Langbar which, if you know the area, you’ll know it’s a little bit steep :-) I normally cycle up and long this road so it was super enjoyable to run it this time. Beamsley Beacon was looking glorious as always. From here it was pretty much downhill most of the way home. Big thanks to some friends I passed on the A65 who cheered me on from their car. I needed it!

Sunday 2nd March

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. I’m so grateful for every single donation. The time taken to reach and then surpass my target has astonished me. The website platform fully respects privacy, so any donation made anonymously truly is that; meaning I have no way of knowing who the anonymous donations are from, so I can’t thank you personally.
10 weeks today I’ll be mid-race! I’ve been trying to fit in a few shorter distance runs during the week, then a long one at the weekend. Excitement is building.

Sunday 23rd February

Wow! Only 2 days since I put the page up and I've as good as hit my target. I've been truly blown away with people's generosity and kindness. Thank you so much to everyone who has donated. It means a great deal to me.

Friday 21st February

Nearly 11 weeks to go! I’ve been scuppered with a cold this week so pounding the pavement has been temporarily suspended. I managed a 16 mile run last Saturday relatively comfortably. I’ve always been concerned that my legs may not hold up to running the 26.2 mile distance (they’ve had a hard life) so I’ve been doing some strengthening exercises on my rest days.
