Event date: 6th March 2011
Nick is raising money for African Flame
I ran the Barcelona Marathon on 6th March 2011 in a time of 4:04:44 to raise money for the charity Serian UK, which 12 years ago established and now supports Noonkodin Secondary School in Eluai, a remote Maasai village in Tanzania.
On a visit to the school in 2009, I saw the fantastic work done by Serian UK in providing an affordable or free education to almost 200 young people aged 14-25, most of whom come from the surrounding Maasai tribes. I taught mathematics and physics and helped to dig foundations for a new water storage unit, and throughout my stay was overwhelmed by the dedication shown by teachers and students alike towards their education.
Serian UK also runs an education programme aiming to end the practice of female circumcision or female genital mutilation (FGM) among the Maasai and the attendant risk of contracting HIV/Aids. This has resulted in an influx of young girls arriving at the school in order to escape FGM and/or forced marriages, often to men in their fifties or sixties. As they have no financial support from their families, sponsors are desperately needed to fund their school fees and living expenses.
I would be truly grateful for any donations- they will make every mile I run worthwhile.
Every penny raised goes to the development of the school, as no admin or expenses are taken from donations.
Thank you for checking out my page. Making a donation is fast, easy and secure thanks to Give as you Live Donate. They'll take your donation and pass it onto African Flame.
