My story
Why I'm riding again — my third year, and the hardest one yet
Three years ago, I did something I never thought I'd do: I got on a bike and rode three days across Sardinia, for children I'll probably never meet.
I'm about to do it again. Third year running. Hardest one yet.
Here's why.
Life was hard for me growing up, for lots of reasons. But school and sport was the thing that changed everything — it got me a scholarship to my local grammar school, then university, and set me on the path to becoming a dentist. I know exactly what one opportunity can do for a kid who's been dealt a tough hand. That's why, in 2023, I set up OBEX Foundation — to give children across Luton, Dunstable, Hemel Hempstead and Hitchin the same kind of chance school once gave me.
Every September since, I've ridden the Jason Robinson Foundation Cycle Challenge for OBEX Foundation.
In 2024, we rode three brutal days across Sardinia — around 367km and 4,410m of climbing, including a day I could only call "The Beast." In 2025, we went further and higher still — 374km, 4,660m of climbing, and a day we just named "THE BIG ONE."
This year, the challenge changes shape again. For the first time, we're not just riding across Sardinia — we're taking a ferry across to Corsica and back too. With over 5,250m of climbing across three days, it's the toughest yet — including one single mountain stage with 2,400m of climbing on its own.
I'm doing it again because the money we raise doesn't sit behind a head office door or a logo on a jersey. It goes straight into our ten partner primary schools. It funds an Outreach Mentor walking alongside a vulnerable child through the leap from Year 6 into Year 7 — the point where the risk of exclusion and disengagement peaks. It funds a breakfast club so a child doesn't start the day hungry. It funds swimming lessons for children who'd otherwise never learn a skill that could one day save their life.
If school and sport could change my life, I believe it can change theirs too. All I have to find is the legs. The money is what makes it matter.
Every pound goes to OBEX Foundation — and if you're a UK taxpayer, ticking Gift Aid adds another 25% at no extra cost to you.
And I guarantee you, that every penny you give will go to the front line to be invested in the future of young people in Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire.
Thank you for getting behind me, Sab :-)
