Event date: 12th September 2015
Louise Russell is raising money for The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland
On September 12th 2015, I will be participating in a grueling 12K assault course which will include obstacles such as an ice bath, electric shock runs and fire, jumps just to name a few. This course will be one of the hardest runs I have ever attended and I have been preparing for this in the run up to the event.
I am running this in order to raise funds for the Pallas Cat project, led by the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS). Pallas cat (Otocolubus manul) as a species, are highly understudied and although only rated as near threatened by the IUCN Red List, as much research as possible is needed to evaluate their survival in their natural habitat.
This small species of cat is very elusive and can be difficult to record in their wild range in Mongolia, Kazakhstan, Iran and Nepal. RZSS aims to take a pragmatic approach to species management and do what they can to improve our understanding of this animal, both in captivity and in the field. There are key areas which have been highlighted in the field where there are four projects being supported. The money raised will help to; map Pallas cat distribution more accurately using camera trapping technology, gain a clearer understanding of the veracity of the recognized Pallas cat sub-species, aid field researchers in the provision of educational material for local villages/ schools within range countries, form a network of Pallas cat researchers, provide data to the IUCN/SSC Cat Specialist Group and to highlight the importance and value of collaboration between zoos and field projects.
The importance of education is key to the protection of every species of range countries.
