Susan Parkyn is raising money for Dementia Forward
Many of us in our community — myself included — have a loved one whose life has been touched by dementia. It is a diagnosis that doesn’t affect just one person; it sends ripples through families, friendships, and everyday life in ways that are hard to put into words.
Dementia Forward has been an incredible source of support for me personally, and for so many others walking this same path. In moments of uncertainty and overwhelm, they offered kindness, clarity, and reassurance when it was needed most.
As a community, we now want to give something back.
This January, we will be taking on an indoor rowing challenge, rowing at least the distance of the Channel crossing — 34km — with every member contributing. I, Sue Parkyn, will also be completing the full challenge personally.
My mum, Linda, was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in December 2025. Watching the impact this has had on her, and on all of us who love her, is the driving force behind this challenge. It is for her, and for every family living with the reality of a disease that currently has no cure.
Participants aged 35 to 85 will be taking part, standing together across generations in solidarity and support. In the early days of my mum’s diagnosis, Kirk at Dementia Forward was an immense help to my family, offering guidance and compassion when we needed it most.
Now it is our turn.
This challenge is about giving back, raising awareness, and supporting those living with dementia — ensuring they, and their families, never have to face it alone.
