My story

At the end of September I shall be travelling to Rwanda as part of a team of volunteers representing Cricket Without Boundaries (CWB), to grow the game of cricket, while using the sport as a platform for health education and social change.

I am looking to raise a minimum of £1200 to cover the costs of transport, team kit, accommodation, the cricket equipment that is left behind for use by the projects and, most importantly, the wages of the coaches who will continue the good work throughout the year.

About Cricket Without Boundaries (CWB)

1. Empower communities
2. Coach children and train adults
3. Link the game to messages and action on health and social issues

We work in partnership with local delivery partners: cricket associations, foundations and sport for development organisations, so our work fits alongside and supports existing sports structures, growing the game and ensuring sustainability.

It is central to our work that local coaches are empowered to lead coaching sessions and identify local health or social issues that can be discussed throughout so that all sessions provide high quality coaching and a safe place for participants to discuss issues that impact their lives.

A key part of CWB's work is running ICC Certified coach education sessions for existing and new coaches. We bolster our partners’ delivery capacity by providing grant funding to employ CWB Ambassadors, who work to achieve CWB’s goals year-round. CWB volunteers support all aspects of CWB’s delivery and provide vital capacity at mass participation events to ensure that Cricket Without Boundaries’ activities are truly inclusive and “without boundaries”.

Working in partnership with the Cricket Associations in each country, the relevant British High Commissions and the ICC, we follow a simple, 3 stage, sports development structure to try to ensure some form of sustained development of the game: 1) coach education; 2) schools coaching, and 3) tournaments.

Our coach education takes the form of teaching the adults the basics of cricket through the ICC’s Introduction to Cricket course (which includes coaching, umpiring and scoring) as well as for more developed coaches delivering the ICC’s level 1 and 2 awards. We try to link our coaching in with each National Cricket Association’s existing development plans.
