A fantastic and valuable project - what an experience

Support Orkidstudio and Sachibondu Health Care Centre

Event dates: 14th May 2017 – 30th June 2017

Keith Cochrane is raising money for Orkidstudio

My story

Sachibondu Rural Health Centre is a small health centre located near Mwinilunga in the remote and rural area of North West Zambia. It is the only health centre in a 300km radius and is used by thousands of people every year, some travelling up to 10 days from Angola and DR Congo.

The existing building was run-down with limited facilities and was struggling to cope with the increasing number of patients. The buildings were badly ventilated with low light levels and perpetuated the spread of disease - where someone who came in to get a broken foot treated may contract a serious infection while sitting in the waiting room. But there are ways we can change this.

The new hospital will be built with better design that utilises natural ventilation and increased daylight in order to lower health risks and provide more usable and enjoyable space. What's more, with a new and bigger facility the government will upgrade its status from a 'Health Centre' to a 'Hospital'; fully trained doctors will be sent to the hospital and this will make it possible to undertake emergency surgeries and treatment.

So far, the project has also brought a lot of benefits to the Sachibondu community by employing 120 people across construction, brick production and site hospitality, with a mix of men and women from a number of local villages, encouraging equality and educating people with skills and knowledge of new construction methods.

To find out more please get in touch with me, or visit Orkidstudio's project blog: orkidstudio.co.uk/blog/sachibondu-designing-for-health/79/

Please show your support, no matter how small - your funding will make such a difference to the Sachibondu community, the Health Care Centre and to all those who will walk through its doors. All donations will go directly to fund everything from materials to local labour.

Any money raised over and above the target will also be used to help in this, or another fantastic project that Orkidstudio are involved in.

Thank you!
