Richard Fraser is raising money for Boost Charitable Trust and St Gemma's Hospice
"They think it's all over.......it is now".
Well it might be after I've completed this little challenge I've set myself !!
To mark my retirement (not quite but nearly) from working life later this year I've decided to try for a final time to raise some money for 2 very well-deserving charities. I want to raise a properly meaningful sum so, maybe foolishly, I've set myself a challenge that I'm hoping you will all think is pretty tough and therefore makes me deserving of your (financial) support.
Unfortunately I'm substantially older than both the "Hardest Geezer" and Kevin Sinfield so I can't compete with their feats but I think walking 39 km (39 being the number of years I've worked for the same company) and cycling 60km (60 being my age a week after I take on this challenge) every day for 7 consecutive days will be hard enough for a 59.964 year old !!
As you all know I'm sort of addicted to playing sport so the first charity I'm supporting is Boost Charitable Trust.
Boost Charitable Trust is a grant-giving sports charity whose mission is to fund and support inspiring programmes which help to improve the lives of the disadvantaged and disabled through the power of sport. They focus on helping people in 5 main areas: physical and learning disabilities, financial hardship, mental health, social exclusion and medical research and relief. Current programmes include an adaptive surf programme for the disabled in South Shields and a walking rugby programme for people with Parkinson's in Leeds. Since 2005 they have awarded over 750 grants across over 70 different sports.
I'm very fortunate in that so far in my life I haven't had to call on St Gemma's Hospice for support or care for any members of my family........but quite a few of my friends have and they say that St Gemma's are absolutely fantastic.
St Gemma's Hospice is an independent charity providing expert palliative care to the people of Leeds, supporting over 3,000 local people a year. Their service is open to everyone regardless of race, colour or creed and completely free of charge to all patients. It costs around £13 million a year to fund the Hospice and keep their services running. Most of this is raised by the local community and generous supporters across the UK but they always need more.
So......I don't care whether it's £1 or £1,000 but please do sponsor me with whatever you can.
Thank you.
