Young at Heart skydive 2023

We are raising money for Young at Heart, a charity who does amazing work with young people with heart defects at Birmingham Children’s hospital.
As some of you may know who are close to Luca and we have chose to share this with. At Luca’s 20 week scan we were told Luca had no Pulmonary artery. We then had the nerve wracking wait for the scan at Birmingham women’s hospital to confirm the diagnosis. There we went for a scan with a room full of over 20 people where we didn’t know what to expect but we were told Luca did have a pulmonary artery but his arteries were the wrong way round and a diagnosis of Transposition of the great arteries. We were given the option of a medical termination but that wasn’t an option for us and then continued a long pregnancy with lots of extra checks but we couldn’t wait to meet our baby boy who was already so loved. We then had to have Luca at Birmingham women’s hospital instead of our local hospital, due to Luca’s heart condition and the potential of him coming out and needing immediate help. At birth Luca was taken straight from his mom unable to hold him to be transferred straight to the children’s hospital. At just an hour old we received a phone call to say Luca was extremely ill and they needed to operate straight away, Luca had his first operation at a hour old. Luca was stabilised and at two days old got to meet his mom on her discharge from the hospital. At just 7 days old our tiny 6lb 8 baby underwent open heart surgery to correct his arteries. Which was a huge success. Luca did amazing and if it wasn’t for the children’s hospital wouldn’t be here now. At 14 days old Luca had done so well, and was able to be discharged home. Luca is now thriving and enjoying his life thanks to all the medical professionals who we are so grateful to. Young at heart continues to support on a daily basis children with heart defects both in the hospital and after discharge.
