About us

The Cathedral Church of St John the Evangelist (also known as St John's Cathedral) is a Roman Catholic cathedral in Portsmouth, England. It was opened in 1882 and is the first cathedral to have been built in Portsmouth. It is the mother church of the Portsmouth diocese and seat of the Bishop of Portsmouth, currently the Right Reverend Philip Egan. It was dedicated on 10 August 1882.

St John’s Cathedral is the mother Church of the Diocese of Portsmouth.

Bishop Philip Egan writes, “Our Cathedral is a beautiful House of God, a worthy shrine for the Eucharistic Presence of the Lord Jesus and a Temple of the Holy Spirit where everyone can meet the Lord.”

Your support will assist the development of the liturgy, music and spiritual life of the Cathedral, as well as the maintenance and development of the Cathedral site and its historic building.
