About us
Essentially a youth club based in an oasis of calm and secure water amidst towering city buildings and social housing, Islington Boat Club has been offering watersports based activities for 50 years. We have seen over half a million children through our gates and hope to see millions more. Started in 1970 by local activist Crystal Hale, IBC has developed from a small youth club into a cross generational, fully inclusive community gem.
Back in April 2020, we had planned to hold our 50th Birthday celebrations and we could never have imagined we’d be facing a challenge like coronavirus; which would mean we would have to shut our gates for the first time in the history of the club.
One thing remains true for Islington Boat Club (IBC), that after Covid 19, and for the next 50 years we want to continue our mission - To inspire learning, improve health, promote socialisation and strengthen the Islington community by providing a wide range of safe and affordable water-based activities for everyone – with a focus on young people, the over-50s and people with disabilities. Our full history can be found on our website.
MISSION50
Event dates: Saturday 1st May 2021 – Friday 31st December 2021
We are aiming to raise £50,000 to secure IBCs future with a series of events and fundraising campaigns around the number 50, to celebrate our 50 years at City Road Basin and to look ahead to the next 50 (minimum!).
Our aim is to join forces with local people, schools, youth groups and businesses and build up a team who will help us raise the money to ensure that we can support them in the future: to encourage people to try out watersports for health and wellbeing; and last but by no means least…………….to have FUN!!

Our taster days and pedalo hire are proving very popular and are generating funds for the campaign. We are now £5,600 into our target. A way to go yet so if you have any ideas to help us get nearer to our target please let us know mission50@islingtonboatclub.com
We would love to hear some of your ideas for challenges!!

Absolutely amazing that we have raised over £4,800 to date (with gift aid).
This is with only (so far) a handful of ambassadors, so our target is well within reach if we can engage more people to take on a challenge.
Please share the details of the campaign, maybe take up a challenge of your own? It just needs to be based on the number 50 and hopefully be a lot of fun!!
