Axe Valley Swimming & Sports Association (The Flamingo Pool), a self-funded charity, boasts a 25 metre swimming pool and a 6m2 hydrotherapy pool with therapeutic pressure jets, the first in the country to be open to the public, and used by local hospitals for physiotherapy & remedial use. Both pools are disinfected by Ultra-violet (UV) light so that leveld of chlorination are approximately one third of a normally disinfected pool.
Since opening, the Flamingo Pool has installed one of the few Aquagym facilities in the country open to the public and one of only two in the South West of England. The Aquagym provides a low impact gym work out, in the water, allowing those unable to use traditional land based equipment, to get moving. The water supports the overweight, participants with injuries or those that just want to combine water with a good workout. The Flamingo Pool has also piloted its ?Aquatherapy? a GP referral exercise scheme which is currently fully funded with available spaces.
The Flamingo Pool embraces eco-friendly technology to lower their carbon footprint and save money. This allows them to provide more activities at the pool.
The range of activities is diverse and innovative. Swimming is available during pre-work, general, lane, off peak, music and adults only sessions.
There is a brand new inflatable pirate island, and family fun sessions with toys and floats for children of all ages. A combination of these are run at weekends and daily during school holidays.
Parent & toddler, one to one and group swimming lessons are also available and run by experienced ASA qualified instructors in addition to elite and swimming club options.
Several Aquafit sessions take place both in the shallow and deep water with flotation belts led by experienced and qualified instructors. Aquagym, GP mobility and adult masters are also available. School sessions take place in term time for schools in Dorset, Devon & Somerset.
RLSS Rookies teaches over 8-12 year old?s vital lifesaving & water survival skills, which can progress to a lifeguard qualification & sports industry career. The Flamingo Pool fells these skills are essential to those living on the Jurassic coastline.
Located on the Dorset and Devon border, the Flamingo Pool is the closest pool to the South Somerset, West Dorset and East Devon schools. Residents of Lyme Regis, Charmouth, Seaton, Chard, Sidmouth, Bridport and surrounding villages are within its catchment area .
