Description:
Northumberland Wildlife Trust was founded in 1971 to protect wildlife and promote nature conservation within Newcastle, North Tyneside and Northumberland. Part of a UK-wide partnership of 47 Wildlife Trusts, today our voice for wildlife is stronger than ever. We are a non-government funded charity, supported by membership, donations, local businesses and charitable trust grants. We manage over 60 nature reserves in the region, in addition to supporting landowners in managing their own sites, to enable native wildlife to thrive. Our work is helping to secure the future of many important habitats and species which might otherwise be lost.
Our aim is to educate, influence and empower people in taking action for nature. Our work delivering education sessions and activities to local schools and community groups helps to spread our message and rally support for our campaigns. In addition, we have 249 volunteers currently venturing out with us to take positive action for wildlife.
Key projects in recent years have included: creating a network of sites along Druridge Bay to provide refuge for breeding and migrating birds; securing the future of red squirrels and controlling grey squirrel populations; ensuring otters have returned to every major local river; and restoring and maintaining 100 hectares of internationally important and rare peatland and heathland, the Border Mires.
We protect wildlife in North East England, so that future generations can continue to engage with wildlife and special places beyond our lifetime.
