Description:
Preserving the Stour for you!
The River Stour Trust is led by volunteers dedicated to the restoration, conservation and education of the Suffolk/Essex River Stour Navigation for the benefit and enjoyment of the public.
We seek to reinstate through navigation, improve river access points and campaign for a change to the byelaws in order to permit electric boats on the whole stretch of the River Stour. Whether you are paddling or cruising, or simply walking or sitting beside it; there is an undeniable benefit of the river and its surroundings to our physical and mental wellbeing.
We actively encourage use of the river for all types of craft and operate trip boats crewed by our fully trained volunteers. One of these boats is the restored John Constable Stour Lighter, which now operates on the upper reaches of the river. Stour barges, or lighters, featured in many of Constable’s most famous paintings depicting the working river and our restored lighter has been named in his honour.
We want to encourage enjoyment of the river so alongside our boat trips we also run educational activities including school visits and talks. Our special annual events are well attended: Walk ‘n’ Water experiences, Teddy Bear Boat Rides, Coracle Regatta, Pirates to the Stour, Sudbury to the Sea (S2C), Bat Cruises and Santa Boat Rides.
