Description:
Walking With is unique to North Tyneside, we provide first line of support over 400 asylum seekers and refugees who locate to the Borough after arriving in the UK seeking sanctuary. Walking with has been in existence for just over 25 years.
We support Asylum Seekers and refugees who reside in North Tyneside, who have experienced trauma whilst fleeing from their home country. When they arrive at Walking With, they feel scared and isolated, most suffering from anxiety and depression. We welcome them into our Centre by creating a culture of welcoming, understanding and belonging to all those forced to flee. We build up a rapport, ensuring they are supported and have a safe haven to come to when they need it. We promote diversity and inclusion throughout our work and ensure people feel safe and listened too. We encourage people to participate in services and volunteering which empowers them to become stronger and part of the community.
We befriend and support individuals who have been traumatised by their previous experiences in their home country and through the asylum process. Our aim is to support people with empathy and compassion whilst empowering them to move forward meaningfully in their new life and enabling them to engage fully with their new community.
We provide a wide range of services to support people, including access to our food and clothing bank, which relieves pressure on their finances. Whilst people are seeking asylum, they are not permitted to work which has a huge impact on their economic wellbeing and mental health. We also support people via one to one support for more complex needs, supporting to access a bank account, register for GP’s, college and education, school admissions and free school meals and any further support required.
