Description:
The Yorkshire Swan & Wildlife Rescue Hospital is the only dedicated full-time swan sanctuary based in Northern England, responding to thousands of calls each and every year to help injured wild animals.
Founded in 2005, the registered charity was established to respond to the urgent need in assisting injured wild swans across the region. Subsequently, the charity now offers a rescue service, dedicated hospital facilities and sanctuary to all wild animals, from its base at Skylark Nature Reserve in the village of Barlow, North Yorkshire. Each bird or animal is rescued with a view to be released back to their rightful place in the wild, and annually, the charity now receives in excess of 6,000 calls and enquiries to help and assist injured animals.
Swans in particular are received for treatment into our hospital, suffering from a range of extensive injuries, most of which are caused by the impact of human activities in their environment. These include ingestion of fishing hooks and snared in carelessly discarded fishing lines, lead poisoning, pollution such as oil and diesel fuel contaminating waterways, deliberate cruelty such as targeted with air rifles and crossbows, collision in flight with overhead power cables, attacks by uncontrolled dogs, and crash landings on the likes of roads/motorway networks.
