100 Miles in May For Melanoma Focus & SKCIN

Mark Burbury is raising money for Skcin and Melanoma Focus

My story

My wife was first diagnosed with malignant melanoma in 2008 when there was no treatment available only surgery, 3 doctors all said that the mole on her back was nothing to worry about, however after making the decision to have the mole removed 11 days later we got the news it was malignant melanoma, our lives changed ……. My wife had to have a WLE to make sure that they had clear margins and was stage 2 nodular malignant melanoma she had a ct scan to check if the melanoma had spread ( the scan shown a small lump under her arm but they was saying it looked benign so it was a watch and wait ) she had regular check ups for the following 5 years and was then discharged from the hospital, thinking she had beaten this awful disease and then fast forward to 2017 she had another mole removed of her back which thankfully come back as benign, then on a follow up appointment my wife had a mark on her leg which she had had for some time, she asked the plastic surgeon if she could be referred to a dermatologist to have the mark on her leg checked out, this was in June 2018, her appointment come through to see dermatologist in September 2018, it was on this appointment that our lives was turned upside down again as on this appointment the dermatologist found a lump under my wife’s arm and unfortunately the melanoma had spread to the lymph nodes and the following months & years have been a rollercoaster to say the least but she’s doing well so far fingers crossed that continues but we know how sneaky this disease is, so I am wanting to do the 100 miles in May for melanoma focus & SKCIN to try and give a bit back and in doing that try and raise awareness of melanoma and staying safe in the sun, people don’t see the skin as a organ yet it’s the biggest organ on our bodies, and melanoma is a deadly disease and can spread through the bloodstream or the lymphatic system it’s not just skin cancer which can be cut away, it’s changed our lives forever and we are grateful that there are now treatments out there which gives patients a chance but there is still a long way to go and we are still losing far to many people to melanoma everyday. Please give what you can no matter how small your donation is every little helps, even for those who cannot afford to donate please share my post so you can help me raise as much as possible for these 2 charities. Thank you for taking the time to read my story….. Mark.
