My story
Hello,
In May 2026, I am going to be running the Southampton ABP marathon for Yellow Door.
Running a marathon in the final year of my nursing degree at Southampton Uni will be an exciting achievement as well as a chance to fundraise for a cause that holds a lot of significance to me.
In the October of 2021, I was raped at a Halloween party. My self-image was shattered, and it has taken years to rebuild my confidence and self-esteem.
Unfortunately, due to the nature of the assault, the police could not find enough evidence to proceed to court and dropped the case.
In England and Wales, around 3% of rape offences reported to the police, end up making it to court (Gov UK, 2025). For adult rape cases, only 53.4% of these cases that have gone to court, end in conviction (House of Lords, 2025).
These statistics are heart-breaking.
The lack of support I felt from the judicial system and the feeling that I was not believed left me isolated and powerless. It felt as if my truth didn’t matter to the system that was meant to protect me.
I have greatly grown as a woman since this. I credit a lot of my healing to movement, in the form of running, swimming or yoga, as a way of grounding myself in my body and letting go of the pain.
Running in particular and finding confidence in pushing my body and my ability has greatly improved my self-image and has shown me how strong I can be.
Yellow Door is a charity based in the Southampton and Hampshire area, which provides support to survivors of sexual violence and domestic abuse. They offer counselling, advocacy, therapeutic services and education programs; with a focus on inclusion for those with additional needs or from marginalised communities.
All survivors deserve this specialised support and care, the impact of sexual and domestic violence is utterly devastating for victims and loved ones, and it can take years to process the trauma (as, unfortunately, many of you will already know all too well).
Donating any amount would mean the absolute world to me and will directly provide hope and support to survivors in their time of need.
Thank-you, Amélie xxx
