Our story

At Eden Rivers Trust,  volunteers Chris and Stephen, along with staff member Ali help to look after Eden's rivers and are now running alongside one of them to raise funds for future river and habitat improvement projects! Starting with a climb to the 3054ft summit of Skiddaw, we will run alongside the entire River Caldew as closely as possible from its high headwaters right down to its confluence with the River Eden in Carlisle, a total journey of just over 50km.  We will be roadside supported by fellow ERT volunteer Tina, and hopefully joined along the way by some staff members and volunteers, making it a big team effort for the rivers we all care about. If you can spare us a few pounds to cheer us on and help the rivers too, we would really appreciate it! Thank you so much for your support.

Our updates

Stephen normally trains on a Wednesday evening but took tonight off, taking it easy ahead of Saturdays big run. This gave a perfect sunny opportunity to squeeze in May’s riverfly survey at Cald Beck 1 survey site, which we will be running right past on Saturday afternoon. The Caldew has seasonally disappeared underground in the lead up to here, and will be joined by the Cald Beck and itself as it emerges back into its channel a little downstream of this survey site. It will make for some interesting and unique views of the Caldew for the runners on Saturday.

With lots of running done and now just over a week to go it’s tapering time!  We’re heading into the final week with some gentler running but also lots of stretching by pulling and bashing Himalayan Balsam at various sites across the catchment. Any help with hitting our target or bashing the balsam would be gratefully received!

We’ve been working on building distances individually, as well as having a mini-team social running the Eamont Way from Penrith to Pooley Bridge and back.
We’ve done a recce run to plot and tweak the best route from the summit of Skiddaw down to Millhouse. This helps us work out the timings and check the route for any potential issues, while maintaining the original aim of following the river as closely as possible using footpaths, roads and bridleways. Lots of great little bridge crossings on the Caldew and wonderful scenery!

We would like to say a huge thank you all those who have donated to our fundraising so far! It’s a tremendous  flying start and we really appreciate it!
