Beating Ewing's Sarcoma

Event dates: 25th October 2010 – 25th October 2011

Debbie Binns is raising money for Bone Cancer Research Trust (BCRT)

My story

One of the most dreadful things about Ewing's Sarcoma - and there are many dreadful things about it - is that it tends to affect teenagers and children. 15 is the peak age. A cancer diagnosis is always a nightmare; but it seems especially painful when for teenagers who are dealing with so many other things. Our 15 year old daughter was diagnosed with Ewing's Sarcoma in March. Since then she has endured some pretty horrific treatment and been really sick. So far so good and she is responding well; but we've a long way to go.
There are a number of things that have really shocked me about this illness. They are:

  • outcomes haven't changed in 20 years
  • as an "orphan" illness it doesn't attract any major sources of funding for research into much needed new treatments.
*Most of these cancers are mis-diagnosed by GPs. This is even though the main symptoms of pain which wakes somebody up at night are never normal in a child or teenager. We paid three visits to our GP before diagnosis - meaning the cancer was left untreated for some four months!
Lots more needs to be done about this horrid horrid illness and the Bone Cancer Research Trust is doing a fantastic job in trying to raise awareness and raise funds. Please please help us to support this fantastic organisation.
