My story

This is my forth trip out onto the Montane Spine Event. Some say it’s an ultra-marathon, others call it an endurance event. For me, it’s just a serious challenge. The last three encounters for me with The Spine have been 108 miles from Edale (Peak District) to Hardraw (Yorkshire Dales) and the 160 miles from Hardraw to Kirk Yetholm (Scotland).

This time I thought I’d make an attempt at the full bifter - 268 miles from Edale to Kirk Yeltholm (Scotland). The full distance of the Pennine Way route. The event starts on the 14th of June and I’ve got 156 hours to get to the finish.  I’ve never attempted this size of event before. This is definitely not going to be easy, and I’m advancing in age so might not get a second chance

This time I’ve decided to raise funds for Mountain Rescue Search Dogs England (MRSDE)

MRSDE is a charity training Mountain Rescue volunteers & their dogs, to find vulnerable missing people in the wild & remote places of the UK since 1971

I’ve been fortunate to have trained two operational Mountain Rescue Search Dogs through MRSDE.

As a family we’ve just welcomed our newest addition, a puppy called Star who we’re hoping will be our next search dog. I thought now was the perfect time to try and raise some much needed funds

My updates

That’s it then, kit check done and passed, race brief understood. Just some last minute kit faffing to do before tomorrow. I’ll cross the line at 0800. I’ll try to send short daily VLOG updates via the MRSDE Facebook page. You can also track me at live.opentracking.co.uk/sspine2026/ my race number is 203. Confusingly there is a David Mason entered as 202. He’s likely to be significantly quicker than me!

It’s getting close now! I’ve checked and double check all my kit. Kit check and race brief scheduled for lunchtime tomorrow.
Thanks to everyone that’s donated so far. I’ve reached my initial fundraising target before even crossing the start line! That’s amazing.
Star doesn’t seem quite as excited as I am!
