Our story

Imperial 600 LGBTQIA+ staff & postgrad network at Imperial College London are hosting a fundraiser for ‘Rainbow Migration’ during Pride Month 2024 (see our full programme).

UPDATE! We have shot past our original target of £1000, so we thought why not try to raise a little more by the end of Pride Month - please do help out!

--

For Pride Month and World Refugee day 2024, we invited staff and students to ditch the blues and greys and instead get dressed up in rainbow colours inspired by the Progress Pride Flag (external link), or to wear a rainbow to show your support.

On 19 June, staff and students came together for a bake sale and photoshoot to mark the occasion.

If you would like to take your own photo and share it with us, please tag us @Imperial600 on Instagram, or post on Yammer with the hashtag #PrideMonth.

Imperial is one of the world's most international universities. 60% of Imperial's students come from outside the UK. We're also the UK university with the most international outlook, meaning that a significant amount of our research involves collaboration with partners abroad. Not all these countries are safe for LGBTQIA+ people, and although the UK is far from perfect, many of us have chosen to make it our home.

Tag Imperial in your social posts, or send your photos to imperial600@imperial.ac.uk with a few words about what Pride Month means to you. Participate as team, group of friends, or just on your own, and get your rainbow on to support our chosen charity Rainbow Migration.

Suggested donation: £2 for individuals / £10 for teams of six / £20 for teams of twelve / just join in the rainbow fun for free!

Rainbow Migration supports LGBTQI+ people through the asylum and immigration system. Their vision is a world where there is equality, dignity, respect and safety for all people in the expression of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

They provide practical and emotional support for LGBTQI+ people seeking asylum to help improve their confidence and self-esteem and reduce isolation.

They give free and confidential legal information and advice to LGBTQI+ people seeking asylum or making an immigration application to live with their partners in the UK.

We also campaign for improved treatment of people seeking asylum.

Thanks to you generous people, we are now just £50 off our fundraising target!

Can help us shoot past £1000 before the end of the week? Please share our page with colleagues or friends and show them what an important cause we think Pride Month and Rainbow Migration stand for.

Just look at one of our donors - the Interfacial Electrochemistry Group - who dressed like an entire rainbow!

Lab head Prof Ifan Stephens told us LGBTQIA+ pride is important for them because:

(i) it symbolises our fight for a fairer society where everyone is free to be themselves, including all LGBTQIA+ people and regardless of gender, sexuality, race, religion, physical ability and neurodiversity.

(ii) we need more people. Our journey towards a more sustainable future – where electrochemistry will play a critical role – is contingent on bringing all hands to the deck. By supporting  LGBTQIA+ pride by waving the flag we want to show that electrochemistry embraces everyone.

Imperial 600's fundraiser for Rainbow Migration is 75% of the way to our goal - all raised by Imperial staff and students for Pride Month and World Refugee Day.

Can you help us reach £1000 for an amazing charity that supports LGBTQ+ asylum seekers and refugees, who cannot live in their home countries so come to the UK for a better life?

This week we have been dressing in rainbow colours, selling cakes, hula hooping - all in the name of charity and we're almost there!

Check out all the Imperial top management who came to support us on Wednesday, and other lovely photos below.

Find out more about and donate now to help us reach the goal before end of June.
