Smileydiver is raising money for The Shark Trust

My story

As most of you are well aware I love diving and observing all the life that our beautiful oceans hold. Sadly, one of my favourites - the shark - is under great threat.

Most European shark populations are declining from overfishing. One-third are threatened with extinction. The EU ban on finning (slicing off a shark's fins and discarding the body at sea) is among the world's weakest.

This all makes me very sad. For those of you who are not divers / marine lovers, try to imagine how you would feel if an endangered species such as a tiger was being mutilated and killed for a body part - shocking and unnecessary. It's the same principle, just because something isn't cute and fluffy doesn't mean it doesn't deserve to be left in peace to reproduce and swim the oceans as they have for millions of years in the past.

So, in a bid to help the Shark Trust raise funds to help lobby against the finning and overfishing that threaten our sharks I will be donning a full Shark mascot costume and being 'Shakey the Shark' for the day on May 7th collecting donations in and around London Aquarium. I am led to believe the suit is particularly hot and uncomfortable, but it's all for a good cause!! It would be great if any of you are around on the day, but I am also hoping those that can't attend will kindly sponsor me for the day - photographic evidence will be provided, so at the very least you get to have a good laugh at me :0)

Established in 1997, the Shark Trust is a UK registered charity which works to advance the worldwide conservation of sharks through science, education, influence and action. Their vision is a world where sharks thrive within a globally healthy marine ecosystem.

Something I very much hope I and future generations get to see.

Thanks for taking the time to read this xx
