Home-visiting support

Home-Start supports families with at least one child under 5 through volunteers visiting them in their own homes. One of its main objectives is to keep children safe from harm. It costs about £1500 for one volunteer to support one family for a year, which is extremely cost-effective when compared to providing foster care or residential care for children (£9000 - £105,000 per annum in 2000). Volunteers visit families once a week for 2-3 hours, offering support, friendship and practical assistance, and encouraging parents' strengths and emotional well-being for the ultimate benefit of their children. Support varies according to the needs of each family.
