My story

Almost 5 years on from my diagnosis of Secondary Breast Cancer, the drugs have changed, the cancer continues to try to defy the medicine, and I’m constantly struck by how challenging the management of this incurable disease is.

Specialists choose next treatment lines based on the latest results from innumerable clinical trials – some work, some don’t work, sometimes they don’t get the chance to know because our body may simply reject the medicine.  It can feel like every day is a battle, constantly trying to outsmart a disease that has one singular mission, to grow.

As I approach my 5 year diagnosis anniversary, and I begin another drug change, my mantra through it all has been “just keep walking”.   Focus on today, do what I can now and don't think about the tomorrow.  Raising funds for more research sometimes feels like the only useful contribution I can give, so I’m going for another challenge.

The Yorkshire 3 Peaks – an iconic hike of 24 miles across 3 peaks (total ascent of 1,500m) in 12 hours.  Thankfully, I have found an equally bonkers group of family and friends to join me in this epic day.  To them I can only thank from the bottom of my heart, as there’s no way I can do this alone.

The Team -   Paul, Ian, Phil, Charlie, Kerrie, Lucy, Chris, Simon, Caitlin, Dan, Ethan, Harry, Jo, Nigel, Paul R, Jules, James & Dan 2

We're raising money for Against Breast Cancer - a charity which supports research into Secondary Breast Cancer, looking for more effective treatments, and ultimately a vaccine.

So here we are, 2 months to go – the boots are worn in, the snacks are being chosen, the legs are being tested and the doubts are well and truly setting in!

Thank you – for any support you can provide.

What a difference a week makes.  This time last week we climbed Snowdon, taking the tricky Watkins path up and making an 18km loop down the other side, climbing 1,250m.  It was a gorgeous walk and afterwards I felt good.

Fast forward a week and the reality hits as to why I’m doing this.  I’m back in the clinic, having my 4th infusion of Chemo.  I know I’ll now be hit with up to 10 days of fatigue, insomnia and gut issues.  The difference this time around is that in 3 days time I’ll be attempting the Yorkshire 3 Peaks.  A mere 24miles, 1,500m of ascent.

The date was booked 7 months ago when treatment was different – best laid plans are frequently wrecked by cancer.  But this is why I’m doing the hike – to highlight this horrific disease and to raise money for research to ensure there is a future where a cure is available.

Thanks go again to the team of family and friends who will be with me on Saturday.  Since the last update we’ve had a few very welcome late editions to the team  - Al, Jono, and David – there may even be a few more!

An equally big shout-out goes to Amanda, the absolute star who will be our support for the day – driving between 2 meet points armed with additional supplies and offering a comfy seat should anyone need it.

I’m hoping to update during the day – mostly via Instagram @pam.birkby

And of course, the donation page will remain live – thank you so much for all your donations, the target is well and truly smashed, but there’s always room for more 😊

What every charity trek needs - a song!
With thanks to my slightly-obsessed-with-creating-stuff-on-AI eldest brother, we now have a tune to carry us up the peaks and across the valleys.
Just as we're all putting our legs to the tests on some big hikes, the team are now also warming up their vocal chords to sing their way through the pain!

Altogether now - "Pam on the Peaks"

Thanks for all your support x
