Our story
In June we lost our much-loved friend and colleague Rob Burrow CBE, who died from motor neurone disease (MND) at the age of 41.
While we are all devastated by his loss, inspired by him, and his tireless determination to raise awareness of MND, our fifth challenge – Running Home for Christmas – will take place this December in Rob’s memory. Once again, we will be raising money for the MND community, and we know Rob will be with us every step of the way.
With Rob very much at the heart of the challenge, the number seven continues to inspire us, in recognition of the shirt number Rob wore throughout his illustrious career in rugby league. The team will visit seven regions of the United Kingdom and each day will be broken into 7km blocks. We will cover distances in excess of 50km each day and hope to raise £777,777.
The challenge begins on 1st December 2024 with a run from Liverpool to Wrexham, before we head to Gloucester, Bristol, and Belfast. We will head to Glasgow and then on to Hull, Northampton, and Leicester, before heading to Manchester and then home to Saddleworth on 7th December.
Every penny raised in memory of Rob and Doddie Weir and in honour of Stephen Darby, Ed Slater and the 5,000 other people around the UK who are living with MND will be donated to the charities who do so much to support those affected by this devastating disease.
The MND Association will receive 50% of the money raised, allowing them to support people living with MND across England, Wales, and Northern Ireland, while funding cutting edge research which gives us all so much hope for the future.
The Leeds Hospitals Charity will receive 22% to help them to continue building the Rob Burrow Centre for MND.
Four additional charities – Irish MND Association, My Name’5 Doddie Foundation, MND Scotland and The Darby Rimmer Foundation – will each receive 7%.
The Irish MND Association will provide essential care and support for people with MND, their families and carers in the Republic of Ireland. Whilst this year’s challenge does not include a leg in the Republic of Ireland, the Irish MND Association are included in memory of broadcaster Charlie Bird, who was part of last year’s challenge in Dublin, and passed away in March this year.
My Name'5 Doddie Foundation will fund research into the causes of MND and potential treatments while also supporting families affected by MND.
MND Scotland will continue to support people living with, and affected by MND in Scotland, while funding research and clinical trials.
The Darby Rimmer MND Foundation will use the money to fund and assist research into MND, while creating a network to help provide support for people diagnosed with MND.
Thank you for your continued support – in memory of Rob, Doddie and Charlie and on behalf of the whole MND community – we will make a difference.
