London 2 Paris for Action Tutoring

On the 21st June the Tibra team of Campbell, Chris and I will embark on a foolhardy 3 day, 508km ride from Hampton Court Palace to the Champs-Élysées.

We hope to raise money for Action Tutoring, a new charity providing high-quality volunteer tutors for GCSE students in inner-city schools.

Action Tutoring began in March 2011 with a pilot programme at the Harris Academy in Peckham and Petchey Academy in Hackney, aiming to support pupils in inner city schools preparing for GCSE exams. Particularly focusing on pupils predicted D/E grades in English or Maths, volunteer tutors worked with pupils for an hour a week for 6 weeks. 75% of pupils went on to achieve a C or above in both their English and Maths, significantly improving their chances of going on to further education, employment or training.

Action Tutoring's growth since last summer has been rapid, now working with 15 schools across London. This academic year over 250 volunteer tutors have signed up to work with pupils, with most tutoring for an hour a week for at least 6 weeks.

I have become closely involved with this project in the past year and I really believe in its potential to improve the confidence and attainment of disadvantaged children. As a young organisation any donations will make a significant difference to our ability to expand. In May 2012, Action Tutoring became an independent registered charity. Next year, with sufficient funding we hope to employ full-time staff to enable us to work with 30-40 schools and over 1000 pupils.
