Peak District Ultra Challenge

Event dates: 8th July 2023 – 9th July 2023

Sam Walton is raising money for Headway North Staffordshire

My story

Hello everyone,

I am going to be taking on the Peak District Ultra Challenge. This is a full 100km challenge, starting in Bakewell, which takes a tough and varied figure of 8 route through Derbyshire's finest scenery. I have always enjoyed sports and being athletic and am really looking forward to taking on the challenge.
I will be completing my challenge to fundraise for Headway North Staffs. This is a charity close to my heart as, I myself have an ABI (acquired brain injury).
My Story:
In 2009 I was unfortunately in a car accident. This caused damage to my optic neve that left me partially sighted and weakness on the right side of my body and occasional seizures. As you can imagine this wasn't a great experience for me, it left me with no confidence, constant fatigue, anxiety and I withdrew myself socially .This lead to me having to have a Craniotomy (having part of my skull removed). I eventually had a Cranioplasty (The repair of your skull using a plate) which is when I found my motivation and confidence to pick myself up and help others.
I went to college and gained my qualifications as a sports therapist whilst working for local sport teams such as: Leek Town FC, Leek RVFC, Congleton FC. I then wanted to inspire others with my story so I went to work at Headway north staffs as part of the gym/therapy team. I have worked here since 27th October 2021 and I am now the Gym manager.

Headway is the leading UK charity dedicated to the care and support of people who have sustained a brain injury. It aims to promote a wider understanding of all aspects of brain injury and to provide information, support and services to people with a brain injury and their relatives and carers.
Headway North Staffordshire promotes a wider understanding of all aspects of brain injury and provides information, support and services to people with brain injury, their families, carers and friends and professionals concerned with brain injury.

Headway Aims to:
Increase awareness and understanding of brain injury and its consequence
Provide information and support for people with brain injuries, as well as their families, carers and relevant professionals
Offer a friendly, understanding environment where everyone feels they belong
We will try to understand individual needs and all information will be held in the strictest confidence.
At Headway, we look at the ability, not the disability.
