Rebecca’s Big Sleep Out

I’m taking part in the Big Accrington Sleep Out because homelessness and the lack of affordable housing are issues that I see the impact of every day through my work in social housing.
My background in employability and inclusion support has also given me a real insight into the barriers people can face when they are experiencing homelessness or housing insecurity. It’s clear that there are significant gaps in support, and when someone is already facing challenges around employment, finances, wellbeing or access to services, breaking that cycle can feel incredibly difficult.
Through the support hub I’ve established with the local library, I regularly signpost people to organisations such as Maundy Relief for the specialist support they provide. I’ve seen first-hand how important these services are, and taking part in the Sleep Out feels like a small way of giving something back to an organisation that does so much for people in our community.
I’ll be honest — I’m super nervous about the challenge! Spending a night sleeping out of my usual comfort zone is definitely going to push me, but that feels like part of the point. It’s a chance to step outside my own experience, raise awareness, and hopefully raise some much-needed funds to support people who are facing homelessness.
