Our story
Wotton-Under-Edge Hockey Club members have created this virtual challenge in memory of Dr Alan Hooper, former Chairman and President who sadly passed away in March this year. Enabling us to come together as a club whilst raising much needed funds.
Dr Alan Hooper:
Alan joined the club in the mid-nineties, and it was under his leadership that the club expanded from two men’s teams and a small junior section to the club we largely see today. He was so much more than just an administrator: player, umpire, and coach. What stood out more than anything else was his passion and love for the game; and his pride in what all sections of the club continued to achieve at all ages and levels. Playing well into his sixties he was a valued team member, mentor, and friend to so many of our members.
The Challenge:
In preparation for the Tokyo Olympics and our Great British men and ladies hockey team going for gold, we will attempt to travel the distance from Wotton-Under-Edge to Tokyo via our olympic gold medal route. A total of 6,776 miles in 12 weeks, either running, swimming, walking, or cycling.
The gold medal team will consist of members, supporters, players, and coaches covering all age groups. We will be raising much needed funds for the Club during these unprecedented times and The Cotswold Way Association, a charity chosen by Dr Alan Hooper’s family.
The Cotswold Way Association:
Is a charity, created in 2016, to ensure that the Cotswold Way and its associated routes do not fall into disrepair because of recent cuts in government expenditure. We are a no frills, low cost operation, run entirely by volunteers.
Alan Hooper was a founding Trustee of the charity and was Secretary from 2017 until he passed away. He was also an active Cotswold Voluntary Warden and his work on the Cotswold Way and other walking trails of the Cotswolds is very much appreciated.
