My story

As some of you know, I used to do a lot of running and marathons, however, I have not run a marathon since 2017 owing largely to meniscus tears in each knee. One in 2017 and one in 2022, both of which required surgery. Surgery that I have struggled to recover from. In fact, in April 2023 my last surgeon told me, after another failed attempt to start sustained running again, that I should stop running and take up cycling. By May 2023 I weighed 98kg and was completely out of shape, but I decided to give running one more chance, as I hate being told what I can’t do. So, through a painful process of 18 months of hard work, starting with literally a walk with small jogs thrown in, I have somehow got myself in shape to run a marathon. I’ve gone from 98kg to 83 kg and from running barely a few strides to 80+mile weeks.  And, on 1 December I will be running the Valencia Marathon.

Just getting to the start line has felt like an achievement, and although I know I won’t get close to my personal best time, finishing the race will be enough.

This could be my last marathon (hopefully not), as I have no idea how long these knees will keep going, so I wanted to use it as an opportunity to raise some money for a couple of charities that are very close to me heart.

Firstly, Carers UK, where I work. We are a small charity that packs a massive punch in securing change to the lives of unpaid carers. I work across Scotland, Wales and NI where we do so much to make lives better for carers, so definitely a worthy cause.

Secondly, Leuchie, where I am trustee. Leuchie is Scotland’s national respite centre providing short breaks for people with neurological conditions, and allowing their carers to get a break as well. Leuchie is a special place, there is literally nothing else like it in Scotland, and the difference it makes to families is unbelievable, so an incredible cause in need of support.

I know my tales of knee woes aren’t the most drastic or challenging you will hear, but hopefully good enough to encourage you to spare a few pounds to these great charities. Please spare, whatever you can
