Celts for Africa - The Kenyan Adventure

OUT OF AFRICA

Our group returned safe and sound from Kenya on Saturday 12th November.

After a marathon journey, upon arrival in Nakuru, we were divided info 3 projects at The Walk Centre, Mama Kerry & Hadassah schools.

Day to day work ranged from teaching support to cooking, painting, installing new guttering, plastering and even football coaching.

As expected, the poverty was quite extreme in places & many kids at the schools were most deprived.

A few stats to note: -

1 in 5 have HIV; 40% of people are unemployed; Average wage is around £7 per week

Despite severe hardships, the spirit of all people we met was inspirational.

I've taken a multitude of pictures throughout the trip and also recorded a journal on our day to day activities.

On the journey home, we were honoured to visit the Kibera Celtic football team. Kibera is a slum area in Nairobi, the biggest in Africa & the second biggest in the world.

It is one of the most densely populated places on earth with a population approaching 1 million people in an area of approximately 1.5 square miles.

Like the trip itself, a truly mind-blowing statistic.

Akin to the rest of the volunteers who travelled, I have been blessed with a host of magical memories which I shall treasure forever.
