Run the Date Challenge
Event dates: 1st July 2020 – 31st July 2020
Simon McDowell is raising money for Care For Cambodia and The Boom Foundation (Northern Ireland)
My story
Recently things have been pretty tough for a lot of people - none more so than for those who have lost loved ones during lock down. Quite often we have felt helpless in our ability to support those around us during this time due to restrictions.
My friend Jonny Hamill lost his uncle suddenly to Covid-19 and closer to home after heroic fight with cancer my father-in-law recently passed away. There are plenty of others who have suffered during this time.
Jonny decided to take on the run the date challenge to honour his Uncle (Edwin Cotter), with any money raised being put towards building a classroom in Cambodia as part of the work of Care for Cambodia. In an effort to support Jonny I will now take on the challenge also.
As well as raising money for the Care for Cambodia project, I will be supporting the Boom Foundation in N Ireland. The Boom Foundation was a great support to Des (father-in-law) and he was very thankful for the services they offered. This will allow me to give a little back in his memory. If I face this challenge with half the courage and determination that Des showed to his battle with cancer then I'll be in a strong position.
The idea of the run-the-date challenge is that you run the equivalent numbers of km's as the days date i.e. on the 1st you run 1km, 2nd you run 2km and so on. Due to work commitments I will not be able to do this challenge in it's truest form but instead will do my own variation action of it. If you total up all the KM in July days it would come to 496KM (308 miles) - so in July I'm going to attempt to run 496KM which averages out at 70 miles per week. To put this into perspective a little during any marathons I have trained for I typically only do about 40 miles per week and recently as there have been no races to train for I've only been doing 20-30 miles a week at most.
Any support that can be provided either via encouragement or financially will be greatly appreciated. Any donations received will be split 50/50 between Boom foundation & Care for Cambodia.
I know a lot of fun raising events have been taken place so please feel under not pressure to support financially.
Many Thanks
Simon
