My story
I am running the Cardiff Half Marathon to raise awareness of Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB) and much needed funds for the butterfly skin charity, DEBRA; to help them in their goal of raising enough money to find effective treatments for people living with EB and ultimately, a cure.
My motivation for doing this is my two year old son, who was born with EB Simplex. EB is a genetic fragile skin disorder, which causes the skin to tear and blister at the slightest touch. It is also rare, affecting an estimated 5,000 people in the United Kingdom. So, before our son's birth, my wife and I had not heard of it, and were completely unaware of the pain and challenges that this condition brings him and other people with EB on a daily basis.
DEBRA has been extremely supportive of us a family since our son was first diagnosed, and we have been very lucky to meet some amazing and inspiring people since the beginning of our EB journey. I therefore, want to do something that can help make a difference to improve the quality of life for people living with EB.
I have set myself an ambitious but hopefully achievable target of raising £100 per mile of the half marathon. I hope that this will go some way in supporting DEBRA’s 'A Life Free of Pain' appeal.
