Running to Remember

Kate Stanton is raising money for Dementia UK and Sands, the stillbirth & neonatal death charity

My story

On 1st October 2004, our son Louis died, aged one day. This year on 2nd October, I will be running The London Marathon to mark his 18th birthday, and in memory of another big influence in my life, dad, who died 3 years ago with dementia. It is a chance to raise money for 2 charities, Sands and Dementia UK.

Sands was there to support us when Louis died and has given us a way to build a legacy for him and make his life matter. Sands is committed to reduce the number of babies dying each day through Stillbirth and Neonatal death, and continues to provide support for anyone affected by the death of a baby.

When dad developed dementia, there was little support in Somerset, and we did not know of the care available from Admiral Nurses, funded by Dementia UK. We wish we had! This is a chance to raise funds for them in memory of dad, so more families can receive help as they care for a family member with dementia.

Anything you are able to give will be hugely appreciated. It is awhile since I last ran the London Marathon, but I can’t think of a better reason to get out there and train and raise funds this year, than an 18th birthday and to remember a great dad.

Thank you for reading

Kate

My updates

Thank you to everyone who has contributed to my Run to Remember. Last Sunday certainly was a Run to Remember in all senses of the word. It is a day I shall never forget. It was a chance to yet again be reminded how difficult, and very sad times can offer amazing opportunities, last Sunday was one of those. Thank you Louis, thank you dad.
My support team and support of all those along the route was incredible. My sister arranged the support and just kept popping up all over the place with mum, James, Rose, Henry and my niece and nephew in tow. They did their own marathon!
Wonderfully 2 charities have also benefited because of each of you being prepared to give so incredibly generous. I know these are difficult times for everyone, so a huge, huge thanks…
I feel incredibly lucky to have had this opportunity….if any of you are considering it, do it. You won’t regret it.
Kate
