Ryan's 2022 Swim Challenge

Ryan Bains is raising money for Mind (The National Association For Mental Health), Dementia UK, Young Lives vs Cancer, NeST - NEPHROTIC SYNDROME TRUST and NRAS

My story

The Challenge

The aim is to in the first of a series of charity challenges to swim 2,022 lengths of my local pool, a total of just under 23 miles in 7 days between Christmas Day and New Year's Eve (inclusive).

In years past I was a more active swimmer but it has been lacking recently, the aim of the challenge is to put myself into the pool to cover this distance to raise money for the charities in the link.

If you have a charity that is close to you that you would like to support with a future challenge please let us know with a short 30-60 second video explaining why your charity should be chosen.

The Charities
Mind
Mental health is becoming a much more prevalent topic in the world and Mind are at the forefront of helping as many people as they can deal as best they can. Just last year Local Minds supported over 443,000 people, responded to over 118,000 queries to support and information helplines and in a community engagement effort 23,500 people signed up for their online peer support community.
All data from Mind website (mind.org.uk)

NeST
Nephrotic syndrome is a kidney condition affecting around 10,000 people (mainly children) in the UK every year, NS can lead to more conditions such as infections, thrombosis or anaemia. There is a huge amount of work at Bristol Children's Hospital to aid in the fight against NS. To learn more about NS head over to the website (nstrust.co.uk). Information taken from NeST website.

National Rheumatoid Arthiritis Society
Rheumatoid Arthritis is an auto-immune disease, meaning that the body is attacking its own joints. It can affect the lining of the joints causing pain and swelling throughout the whole body. Due to the nature of RA there isn't a one size fits all solution, meaning that many people deal with RA in their day to day life, maintaining it as best they can. NRAS have a vision to help and support all with RA every step of their journey, and for more information please navigate to nras.org.uk. Information from NRAS website.

Dementia UK
Dementia is a condition that doesn't tend to need much introduction. It can cause a number of problems related to memory, thinking and speech. A prediction by Dementia UK is that by 2025 over 1,000,000 people will have a diagnosis of dementia, and almost all of us will know someone living with the condition. For more information head to dementiauk.org. Information from DementiaUK website.

Young Lives vs Cancer
For a number of UK families, hearing that a child has cancer is the most difficult news that they will hear emotionally, there is also a huge financial implication of this. Young Lives vs Cancer aim to help on multiple fronts, from getting the news, to the finance, to making change happen to breakthroughs onto a platform for the whole UK. The website to find out more is younglivesvscancer.org.uk. Information from YoungLivesVsCancer website.

The Rules
*Every day has to cover more distance than the previous
*The total number of lengths needs to be 2022
*It all has to be done in front crawl, no walking allowed

How you can help
More important that making large donations on fundraising pages is sharing, every donation is appreciated but the larger the reach, the higher the amount raised and the more each charity benefits. So do what you can to share this on whatever platform you can to get donations for your charity.

All donations are split equally amongst the charities.

Thank you for checking out my page. Making a donation is fast, easy and secure thanks to Give as you Live Donate. They'll take your donation and pass it onto Mind (The National Association For Mental Health), Dementia UK, Young Lives vs Cancer, NeST - NEPHROTIC SYNDROME TRUST and NRAS.

My updates

31st December 2022: And so at the end of 2022 we have finally completed the swim. With just under 19 hours in the pool this week the lengths are done and we have hopefully made an impact to the lives of many through your donations.

Please all share the page as it will stay open for a while to allow for late donations.

It’s also time to take a moment to thank you all very much for your donations and support this year.

On to 2023 and some more challenges.

Happy New Year Everyone!

30th December 2022: We’ve ended Day 6 with just 365 lengths left to do to complete this challenge. Whilst this is a huge amount less than the original 2,022 it is still a big number and it’s what this week has been building towards.

Before this challenge finishes I want to say a huge thank you to everyone who has shared and donated. Along with this thanks is also a huge plea to share this around as much as possible!

I’ll update you all post swim tomorrow and I hope you have an amazing end to 2022!
