Shelton Striders are raising money for Umbrella Derby and Derbyshire
Thanks for taking the time to visit our fundraising page.
Shelton Striders (a Derby Community running group) are proud to support Umbrella Derby and Derbyshire as our 2026/2027 charity.
This year, we are setting the target of £5,000 towards the running costs of their Play, Activities, Life-skills and Sports (PALS) project that works with over 500-600 disabled children across the city and wider southern Derbyshire.
Since 1986, they have built a strong reputation supporting disabled and Neurodivergent children, young adults, and their families/carers across Derby City and Southern Derbyshire.
They aim to provide holistic, high-quality support tailored to each family’s needs, helping them reach their full potential. We collaborate with hospitals, social services, and other charities to deliver emotional and practical help, home support, training, and emotional wellbeing activities.
Each year, Umbrella supports over 2000 families. It provides fun, inclusive developmental opportunities for more than 500 children though it's PALS project, while offering customised packages that help around 105 of the most severely disabled children and young adults to build independence and life skills.
Umbrella has recently launched an early intervention project, which provides intensive support for families with children who are awaiting diagnosis or have recently been diagnosed with significant life-altering disabilities, to provide extensive time-banded support to build family/carer capacity and resilience to allow the whole family to thrive. They work with local social workers and health workers on referrals to this program.
The PALS project offers a carefully planned programme of youth clubs, choir/music, sports, educational visits, gardening, arts and crafts, cooking and outdoor activities help young people develop new skills and a sense of independence and fun. Sessions are structured and run with a focus on enjoyment, reducing anxiety, improving mood and supporting mental wellbeing.
Importantly, activities are always led in a way that doesn’t involve direct parental supervision, and participants are encouraged to try new activities and challenges, take part in activities that they might not normally have the opportunity to do, and develop the confidence to do so within the safe space we provide.
