SMR fund raising

Sarah Fletcher is raising money for Scottish Mountain Rescue

My story

A couple of years ago in 2022 I did a number of runs to raise money for SMR.  This year I’m taking part in at least 5…photos of efforts will be included!

In June 2016 my dad started out on a walk that would take him into the hills above the village of Dornie, Wester Ross. He didn’t return at the appointed time and eventually later that day Kintail Mountain Rescue started the search that would continue over the next few weeks. I cannot really describe to you what it was like in those first couple of weeks when the search and rescue teams were mobilised, but it was a huge effort comprising both Kintail and Skye MRTs, the police, the Coastguard, family and friends. I remember the teams working tirelessly and in pretty horrific heatwave conditions.

Sadly my dad never returned to us and his body was found 6 weeks later. Kintail MRT brought him down off the hills and home to us.

Both MRTs worked constantly and I have the utmost respect for their commitment and dedication in helping to keep us safe in the outdoors. They are a voluntary organisation, and many of the people who came to our aid during that time were self employed, giving their time in so many ways and risking their own lives.

Many of my friends and colleagues enjoy and work in the mountains and landscapes of Scotland, and we are privileged to have such an organisation as SMR should we ever need them. SMR rely on charitable donations and I hope that you can spare a few pounds to help support their efforts.

Thank you for checking out my page. Making a donation is fast, easy and secure thanks to Give as you Live Donate. They'll take your donation and pass it onto Scottish Mountain Rescue.

My updates

HI all - this is just a long-awaited and final message to say thank you all very, very much for your sponsorship and kind words of support in helping me raise this money for such a worthy cause. Initially I had intended to aim for £500, but when your contributions came in so thick and fast I left it open ended and you didn’t disappoint. Special mention goes to my sister Jane, who started me up and running again and ran with me on the Illuminator, and Elaine and Ken Simpson, who collectively range the Baxter 10k and walked/ran the Illuminator. Thanks again so much.

In memory of my dad, Roger Fletcher who so loved walking the hills of Scotland.

My next run is the Illuminator for which I am being joined by my very good friend Elaine Anderson. So thanks for coming on board Elaine, it’s very much appreciated! The Illuminator starts at 18.45 and follows the Fungal Road, an old drovers route which passes over the Mounth between Glen Esk and Deeside. Elaine and I want to thanks you all so very much for all your continuing contributions. Will keep you posted…and yes there will be more photos! Xxxx

Hi all I finished the first run, the Inverness 10k with medal to prove it! Lovely weather and a good run, although not sure red is my colour…it clashed with my beetroot face on crossing the finishing line. Thank you again for all your contributions and very kind words of support. Xx
