Norman Mills is raising money for SOLIHULL ACTION THROUGH ADVOCACY

My story

Solihull Action through Advocacy (SAtA) is a charity created in 1995 to deliver advocacy support to adults with learning disabilities living in Solihull.

We are funded partly by charitable donations and partly through a service level agreement with Solihull Care Trust and are managed by a Board of Trustees who are all volunteers.

Our aim is to provide a voice for adults with a learning disability and to create a more equal and just society by empowering people through the provision of an advocacy service that will ensure they are not excluded because they do not express their views in ways that people understand.

Advocacy is taking action to help people say what they want, secure their rights, represent their interests and obtain services they need.

Advocacy promotes social inclusion, equality and social justice.

Solihull Action through Advocacy believes that people with a learning disability have a right to control their own life and to be valued members of our society. We will support people in whatever way best suits their individual needs, to take part in making the decisions and choices that affect them.

Solihull Action through Advocacy is guided by the principle that every person should be valued, and that people should not be ignored and excluded because of the prejudices they face or the lack of respect they are shown by others.

We promote a person centred approach in everything we aim to achieve, guided by the following values.

Individuality
Being recognised and valued for who we are and treated as a unique person with individual needs, hopes and aspirations

Rights
Being entitled, as human beings, to certain basic rights such as respect, freedom, equality and privacy

Choice
Having access to a range of options and information, which enables us to make our own decisions and control the direction of our own life.

Privacy
Having the freedom to have time to ourselves, to be alone if we wish, to have our own personal space and to have these things respected

Dignity
Being valued and respected, and treated by others in ways that uphold our rights.

Respect
Having our dignity acknowledged, and our opinions and feelings valued and responded to.
