My story
I am going to the Sahara to raise vital funds for the Hospice of St Francis, which despite providing end-of-life care and comfort to thousands, receives only a fifth (20%) of its funding from the government. It needs to raise at least £5m this year and every year.
The Hospice of St Francis is particularly dear to me because it's where my father - who had an aggressive throat cancer - was cared for beautifully 36 years ago. He received vital pain control and and help to breathe in his final days, in the Hospice's tranquil surroundings.
The Saharan challenge involves walking 50km in three full days, in the sand dunes and gravelly terrain of the world's biggest desert. Even in November it could be incredibly hot. We will have no creature comforts (not even loos) and will be camping under the stars. Every £ you give will spur me on and help me to finish!
I have chosen to fund ALL the costs of the trip myself, meaning that every £ in sponsorship will go to the Hospice, and will not be used to pay for my airfares, tent, or even the camels carrying some of our things.
I'm required to raise the the bulk of my sponsorship by August, so please don't delay!

I have been thrilled and amazed to have received such support from all of you - thank you! At the time of writing it feels tantalisingly close to my target, so if you're still thinking about it, let's try and smash the target! That would feel so good, wouldn't it?
I won't embarrass any individual but must thank the hosts of this fundraising page, Give As You Live. Not only did they support me with a small grant to pay for some of the quick-drying clothing I'll need in the Sahara, but they also hold a monthly draw for fundraising pages doing well, and thanks to you I won £50 this month towards my total! This was very unexpected and is now shown in the list of donors.
It really feels like a communal effort, and I'm so proud of everyone who's helped thus far. It's really encouraging - THANK YOU!
T-shirts have arrived!
First outing for the new Trek Sahara t-shirt provided by the Hospice. Very comfortable! Pic taken by my mate and 'personal trainer' John who organised an 8-mile walk from Watford to St Albans on Weds 29th July, one of the hottest days in recent weeks. Excellent preparation: it was 33 deg C he reckoned!
Training in the summer sun has started! This photo is of one of my regular walks - so beautiful at the moment.
