Our story

My brother David was diagnosed with MND in February 2024.  In April he and a large group of his friends drove up from Leicester to climb Ben Nevis in the snow to raise funds for MND. Golf events have been many and in October, he pushed himself to climb one of the three peaks in Yorkshire to raise more funds. November seen him take part in his last physical challenge banging the drum and  walking around Saffron Lane with Kevin Sinfield on day six of his 7 in 7 challenge.
David is no longer able to undertake on any more physical challenges as his condition is deteriorating but his family and friends can.
I have always wanted to walk the Lairig Ghru.  A very remote 19 mile walk through the longest pass in the Cairngorms. The walk will begin in Braemar and finish at Rothiemurchus.
I won’t be alone, as friends and family hearing my challenge are also walking and raising funds for MND Scotland and for LOROS hospice, Leicester.

Our updates

This time next week,  21 June we will begin walking from Linn of Dee to Rothiemurchus, through the Linn of Dee for my brother David who was diagnosed with MND in February 2024.
Motor neuron disease (MND) is a rapidly progressing terminal neurological illness, which stops signals from the brain reaching the muscles. This causes muscle weakness and wasting. MND can rob someone of the ability to walk, talk, swallow and breathe. The average life expectancy of someone with MND is just 18 months from diagnosis. There is no cure or meaningful treatments.
Key stats
• Someone’s lifetime risk of getting MND is 1 in 300
• There are around 450 people in Scotland currently living with MND.
• On average almost 200 people are diagnosed each year in Scotland.
• 30% of people with MND die within 12 months
• Average life expectancy is just 18 months from diagnosis.

Please donate and or share with family and friends.
With just over 12 weeks to go I’ll start to post more regularly to let folks know how we are getting on with the training, tips for preparing for the walk, as well as naming those who will also be walking the Lairig Ghru on 21 June.
