My sister Rosie and I are swimming 2 miles in the Serpentine for two small charities.

APPEAL
APPEAL is a tiny London charity law practice that fights wrongful convictions. Their lawyers pick up cases everyone else has given up on, dig back through and find the new evidence needed to get someone back in front of the Court of Appeal.

You probably know the Andrew Malkinson's case tey fought for. He was convicted in 2004 of a rape he didn't commit and spent 17 years in prison, including years past his release date, because he wouldn't admit guilt. APPEAL took the case on and brought new DNA evidence forward, which matched another man, and Andy's conviction was overturned in 2023.

There are other people still waiting. That work costs money and there aren't many of them.

CARAS (Community Action for Refugees and Asylum Seekers)

CARAS works with newly arrived young asylum seekers in south west London - English classes, youth clubs, casework, sport. Mostly it's a place where people get treated decently while they wait, often for far too long, to find out what happens to them.

The amounts are small enough to feel almost silly. £6 gets someone to a casework appointment they otherwise couldn't reach, or buys the ingredients for the kids to cook a meal together at youth club. £50 covers a full one-to-one casework session. £25 a month puts someone through a year of English lessons (English lessons in a particular being so fundamentally important)
