Alex Hiam is raising money for Signal
Our partners in Zambia have themselves secured some funding to have some donated computers shipped out to Zambia, to help training deaf people in computing and ICT skills so that they have a better chance of gaining employment and becoming less dependent on others.
All they need is £350 to cover the transport costs from Lusaka (capital city) to Kitwe. If they are unable to raise the money there is a good chance that they will lose the computers.
To be a deaf child or young person in sub-Saharan Africa is to be one of the most vulnerable and marginalised people in the world - living without communication, understanding or protection.
We have found that deaf children and young people
are usually rejected by their community and sometimes even their family, hidden away because of fears and superstitions about deafness or because no-one can communicate with them.
They probably won't go to school, less than a third of them attend school compared to three-quarters of hearing children.
They are also eight times more likely to be a victim of sexual abuse than hearing children, so have a much higher risk of contracting diseases such as HIV/AIDS.
Dear young people are likely to be dependent on their family for the rest of their lives, lacking the skills or communication needed to earn a living or understand the world around them.
Please help with this important and achievable goal!
