Young at Heart Sky Dive

Event date: 24th September 2022

My story

Young at Heart is a charity very close to our hearts. Our heart journey started in October 2012 and like so many other heart families we never knew about CHD or complex heart conditions in children.

Our miracle Alfie was born following IVF, my wife had a normal pregnancy and normal delivery, but at 4 days old she knew sometimes was not right, Alfie was not eatting, would not wake on his own, would not cry even when he was put in the bath. We mentioned our concerns to the midwife who came out the day before and her response " make the most of it"

My wife decided different and took him to the hospital where we had him, with doctors and nurses all around Alfie we nearly lost him, it was decided he needed life support and was blue lighted to Birmingham Children’s Hospital and straight into intensive care, where another team was waiting for him.

The next morning we was told Alfie had a very complex heart condition that had never been seen before. We was told the surgery was very high risk and complicated and we should consider turning off the life support....NOT a option,
At 7 days old Alfie had his 1st open heart surgery the recovery had many bumps in the road but our boy was showing us what a fighter he was going to be.
After 3 months we went home.

Alfie has had another 2 open heart surgeries at 7 months old and 22 months old and he has had 4 heart catheters in-between. This along with so many other health issues but he takes everything is in stride and never complains.

In May this year Alfie had some more health complications that we are now getting answers for but Alfie now needs his 4th opening heart surgery. Not even 10 years old and our brave boy as been through more in his life already than most people do in all their lives.

This 4th open heart surgery is going to be very high risk and complicated and the consultants are not sure if it can be carried out.

We live each and every day to the max and make precious memories with our boy.

Young at Heart supports all families going through similar situations, under the care of Birmingham Childrens Hospital cardiac unit

It's like one big extended family, support is there through good and bad times and 24 hours a day. The charity is run purely by volunteers with NO paid staff.

Events are put on throughout the year to bring the families together and lifelong friendships are formed

Medical equipment is brought for the families such as INR machines and defibrillators

But I think the children love receiving their bravery certificates and personalised superhero bears

Without the support of sponsorship and outside funding none of this would be possible please help support the charity and put a smile on a child's face.

Thank you ❤️

Thank you to everyone who donated. Even though I was very anxious I really enjoyed the experience and thought of Alfie and all the other heart warriors when we was going up in the plane ❤️
