About us:
Fulham Reach Boat Club (FRBC) is a Sport for Good charity which changes lives through rowing by making it an accessible, inclusive and a transformative activity. Our mission is to provide rowing opportunities to improve physical and mental health, build confidence, a sense of community and environmental responsibility for everyone and particularly those from underserved communities.
What We Do:
We focus on three key impact areas:
Youth Development – Improving physical and mental well-being of young people through our state school, free holiday and junior bursary programmes
Reducing Reoffending (Boats not Bars) – Reducing reoffending rates through our Boats not Bars programme
Accessible Rowing – Ensuring rowing is accessible to people with disabilities
Why:
- Less than half of young people are physically active according to the Chief Medical Officers recommendation of 60 mins of activity a day.
- A quarter of the adult population remain inactive with less than 30 mins of activity a week.
- Physical activity levels are significantly lower if you are less affluent, if you live in a more deprived place or come from certain demographic groups. (Sport England Active Lives 2024)
- 1 in 5 young people in England have a mental health problem, up from 1 in 9 in 2017 (MIND 2024).
- 46% of prison leavers re-offend within 1 year of release (Ministry of Justice, 2016); the Ministry of Justice states that participation in sport can contribute to efforts to reduce reoffending.
- Less than half (44%) of disabled people say it’s easy for them to physically access outdoor spaces (vs 78% of non-disabled people).
Making the difference:
Being active and taking part in a sport like rowing boosts happiness, reduces anxiety and isolation. It fosters friendships, builds resilience and self-worth. It develops life skills such as teamwork, leadership and conflict resolution. It is essential for maintaining muscle and brain health.
Rowing is a unique sport that combines access to the natural environment, a high level of teamworking, and is a rhythmic non-contact form of physical activity that utilises 86% of the muscles in the body making it the perfect combination for all our programmes’ participants
Your Support:
Your donation can enable
- a young person to improve their mental health and outlook through rowing
- a prisoner to build hope for the future through structured in prison programmes and a new community on release
- a person with disabilities to have freedom of movement on water for the first time.
With your support FRBC will continue to drive positive change in health, inclusion, and environmental awareness through the transformative power of rowing.
