My story

Thankyou for visiting my “giveasyoulive” fundraising page. Please read on to see why a “Christmas Miracle” has inspired me to raise money for “BASICS” Scotland charity when I run my first Marathon.

My nephew Lucas sustained a serious head injury during a family walk at Tyninghame beach on Christmas Day after a fall from a height onto rocks. The severity of the accident resulted in him having to be airlifted to Edinburgh’s ERI then blue-lighted to the Western General for emergency lifesaving surgery.

With heartfelt thanks to the combined work and efforts of the Scottish Ambulance Service, Paramedics and the Special Operations Rescue Team (SORT), East Lothian Police, Dunbar and North Berwick Coastguard ground teams and Coastguard Rescue Helicopter 199, Medical staff at ERI, Neurosurgeons and nurses at the WG and the Neurorehabilitation team at the Astley Ainslie Hospital Lucas pulled through and now continues to make a remarkable recovery.

In his surgeon’s words it was a “”Christmas Miracle”!

BASICS Scotland (British Association of Immediate Care) basics-scotland.org.uk specialise in promoting the provision of high quality pre-hospital emergency care to health professionals in Scotland. This includes work with BASICS Responders who are rural GP’s, Nurses and Paramedics who have received additional training through BASICS Scotland.

Lucas as a 2nd year medical student at Edinburgh is also very likely to come into contact with BASICS through some of their pre-hospital training courses and the work they do with Scottish university medical degree courses.

We all know how heavily our emergency services are relied on but when an accident occurs in a remote or difficult location it can take longer for them to be present on the scene. Knowing the importance of early medical intervention this is why I have chosen BASICS Scotland as the charity I will raise money for when I run the Edinburgh Marathon in May this year.
